It is with great sadness that I must announce Parvo season has begun for 2015.
This month we have had our first confirmed cases of this fatal but easily preventable disease.
So far the owners have opted for humane euthanasia instead of costly medical treatment, which consist of: Intensive care hospitalisation including the actual physical care: bathing; changing bedding; and comforting, as well as the medical care: giving daily injections of antibiotics to prevent secondary infections; anti nausea medication to stop the endless vomiting; nasal feeding tubes trickle feeding life sustaining electrolytes; Intravenous fluids to counteract dehydration from fluid losses caused by diarrhoea and vomiting, which can lead to seizures and death.
There is no guarantee that even with agressive treatment that there will be a successful outcome, and prevention is as simple as a course of 2 to 3 vaccinations as a puppy, and then regular boosters throughout the life of your dog.
Please be a responsible, caring pet owner and make sure your pets are up to date with their vaccinations, and tell everyone you know to do the same.
For further information on this deadly virus please read our comprehensive article on this website. Please note, the vaccination protocols for Australia are slightly different than the information given. Please contact the clinic on 99642828 for further information.
